Proposals to embed mental health training in workplaces as part of a national strategy have been announced by the Scottish Government.

The new action will expand the targets of the 2013-16 Suicide Action Plan, with key elements including:

  • making more use of social media to provide information and support;
  • building stronger partnerships between public, private and third sector organisations;
  • making better use of data and evidence to ensure more effective interventions.

Suicides in Scotland have declined 17% since 2006, with 738 deaths in 2016.

Announcing the consultation on the proposals, Mental Health Minister Maureen Watt said: “While the suicide rate in Scotland has fallen over the past decade, I want us to go further to prevent deaths. It is vital we hear the views of people affected by suicide and those delivering support as we shape our action plan.

“As part of our proposals, we aim to produce a world-leading suicide prevention training programme for employers. We need to create a culture across Scotland where workplaces deliver mental health and suicide prevention training with the same commitment as physical health emergency training such as CPR and first aid.”

Shirley Windsor, lead for Public Mental Health at NHS Health Scotland, added: “We are particularly pleased to see recognition of the need for a universal response to suicide prevention. The training programme, raising skills and building confidence in everyone, not just professionals, to spot and respond to people in distress, has huge potential to help prevent suicide in Scotland.”

The consultation will run for seven weeks until April 30, and will include six public events. The final plan is expected to be published in the summer.
