Funding for the Community Pharmacy Practitioner Champions programme in Scotland has been confirmed for 2017-18.

Details are set out in NHS Circular PCA (P)(2017) 14, which says that funding agreed for 2016-17 will roll forward for this year. The programme for 2017-18 has three core areas for pharmacy champions to focus on:

  • supporting community pharmacy teams to implement the care bundle around Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) interventions, as outlined in the annual pharmacy settlement arrangements covered in NHS Circular PCA(P)(2017);
  • supporting community pharmacy teams to continue to develop and embed the learning outputs from Scottish Patients Safety Climate Survey from 2016;
  • assisting NHS Education for Scotland carry out a community pharmacy workforce survey in early 2018.

Community pharmacies will be expected to use structured intervention tools and supporting materials to support and counsel patients either being dispensed or purchasing NSAIDs, says the latest letter. “Details of the tools and supporting material will be issued under a separate circular to community pharmacies in the coming weeks.”

The letter also sets out health board funding allocations for Community Pharmacy Practitioner Champions for 2017-18 as follows:

NHS Board £
Ayrshire & Arran £21,500
Borders £6,100
Dumfries & Galloway £8,700
