Public Health England has published the service specification and Patient Group Direction for this seasons flu vaccination campaign for community pharmacy.

PSNC says that both the specification and the PGD should be read alongside its own detailed guidance on providing the service. It is warning contractors that they must notify NHS England of their intention to provide the service before offering customers the service, otherwise the NHS Business Services Authority will not accept claims for payment.

Although the PGD has been published, contractors must wait until amendments to The Pharmaceutical Services (Advanced and Enhanced Services) (England) Directions 2013 (the Directions) have been made before providing the service and vaccinating patients.

Participating pharmacies must satisfy several criteria, confirming that the pharmacy premises are appropriate, and that requirements around the following are being met:

  • pharmacist training and Declaration of Competence
  • data capture and sharing of information,
  • vaccine storage
  • gaining patient consent,
  • GP notification
  • claiming payments.

Patients will need to complete a questionnaire before being vaccinated. “NHS England has made available the IT platform used last year, to enable patient questionnaires from the Flu Vaccination Service to be completed electronically either by the patient themselves or with help from the pharmacy team,” said PSNC.
