A new award will recognise how changes to a High Street by a local business have improved the health of customers and local communities.

The Royal Society for Public Health is encouraging community pharmacies, along with other retailers and organisations including local authorities, to enter its Health on the High Street Award.

The award has been inspired by the RSPH’s ‘Health on the High Street’ campaign. This is calling for local authorities to be given greater planning powers to restrict unhealthy businesses in the high street, and to make public health criteria a condition of licensing all types of business.

Entries for the Award need to be made by April 20. The RSPH says entered projects and programmes could include:

  • retailers increasing healthy options for customers;
  • retailers offering training and employment for local populations;
  • High Street businesses providing opportunities to promote social interaction for local communities;
  • councils using planning to enhance public space;
  • charities providing local responses to need through retail (fundraising) or support and information (drop-in services).
