An amended patient group direction has been published which will allow pharmacies to offer the flu vaccine to social care workers.

NHS England has published the revised specification for the National Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Advanced Service. It now includes, for the 2017-18 season only, the category of social care workers.

These are defined as: “Health & social care staff, employed by a registered residential care/nursing home or registered domiciliary care provider, who are directly involved in the care of vulnerable patients/clients who are at increased risk from exposure to influenza, meaning those patients/clients in a clinical risk group or aged 65 years and over.”

PSNC has advised: “All contractors who will be vaccinating care home and domiciliary care workers must read and sign the new PGD, which also requires a signature from an authorising manager. The previous PGD (published in August 2017) does not include the care home and domiciliary care workers group and will therefore not cover this cohort of patients.”
