A consultation has opened on new standards for pharmacy premises in Northern Ireland. Running until November 27, it seeks views on proposed changes which will “mark a shift towards simplified and less prescriptive Standards with a clear focus on the outcomes for patients.”

The draft proposals have been set out by the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland as it has to reflect the change in legislation introduced under The Pharmacy (Premises Standards, Information Obligations, etc.) Order 2016.

Under the new legislation, the Society has the power to remove pharmacy premises from the register or disqualify a pharmacy owner due to breaches of standards set by the PSNI. Explanatory notes for the 2016 Order say that “sanctions may only be applied in relation to breaches of premises standards where the [Statutoy Committee] is satisfied that the pharmacy owner is unfit to carry on the relevant business safely and effectively.”

Mark Neale, Head of Public Affairs at the Society, said: “Tens of thousands of people in Northern Ireland enter pharmacies each day. With the expansion of pharmacy roles and changes to the way in which pharmacy services are being operated, our proposed Premises Standards aim to provide further assurance to patients and the public that when they enter a pharmacy their safety is paramount.”
