Over half the population in Wales has reported having bought an over the counter medicine in the past four weeks.

Data published in the National Survey for Wales indicates that:

  • 54% of respondents had bought conventional medicines (such as painkillers, indigestion remedies);
  • 5% had bought herbal medicines;
  • 20% had bought mineral or vitamin supplements;
  • 39% had not bought any medication.

This is the first time the data has been collected in the annual National Survey, which involves face-to-face interviews with more than 11,000 randomly-selected adults.

The data also showed that 69% of people had used the services of a pharmacist in the past 12 months. This compares to figures for other non-GP primary care services of the dentist at 68%, the optician at 50%, and the GP surgery nurse at 50%.
