There were 62.0 GPs per 100,000 population in 2017, a decrease of 11.2% from the 69.8 per 100,000 in 2009.

This equates to an individual GP’s ‘share’ of patients increasing from 1,433 to 1,612 patients.

The figures were given in response to a parliamentary written question from Catherine West, the MP for Hornsey and Wood Green.

Health minister Steve Brine MP set out the figures since 2010 as follows:

Census

All Practitioners (excluding Retainers and Registrars and Locums) headcount per 100,000 population
2009 69.8
2010 67.8
2011 67.8
2012 66.9
2013 66.5
2014 66.5
2015 65.5
2016 63.6
2017 62.0

The figures are given for data as at September 30 each year. The GP headcount per 100,000 population figures were calculated based on the Office for National Statistics population figures for England that were available at the time the relevant GP headcount figures were originally published.
